Table Topic
Big Joe
Darren LaCroix- the Toastmasters International 2001 World Champion of Public Speaking.
1. Never turn down Stage Time- 성장은 관중앞에 서있는 시간과 비례, 실패를 많이 할수록 성장 2. 3. Be competent enough to be humble 4. Thought process in listener's mind 6. Pose- Speech는 monologue(독백)이 아니라 dialogue(대화)이다. 7. Can't wait to give it- 자기가 정말 관심있어 하고 그 얘기를 하고 싶어서 못견디는 얘기를 하라.
#기타 -Get to your points -Story of mine-> how to connect audience: 관중은 자신에게 가장 큰 관심이 있다. WIIFM(What's in in for me?)
I
guess the answer is yes, since you are in Beijing.
When
I lived in Qingdao, I was dreaming about Beijing.
Qingdao
is a good place to live, but there was nothing new after living there for a
year.
After
arriving in Beijing, I was so eager to travel the city like looking for the
treasure.
Then,
I happened to know there was television program “This is Beijing” and it shows
many historical sites. Moreover, they already published a book.
I
bought the book immediately and made a plan to visit at least one place a week.
Later,
I managed to visit only one place every two month.
The
first place I went is DA Zhong Si, a big bell temple.
Because
every time I heard DA Zhong Si Station on the subway, I was thinking
1.DA
Zhong Si is nearby
2.There
might be a Big Bell, since it is called DA Zhong Si.
Then,
I was wondering how big the bell is.
So,
I went there and found out that
There
was the biggest bell in the world, which weighs more than 46 tons, which means
it is heavier than me by 715 times.
It
is already 600 years old and has 230,000 characters of Buddhist scriptures on
the bell.
Yong
Le emperor, the third emperor of Ming Dynasty, ordered to make the big bell
after killing a lot of people to be an emperor. I
guess that’s why the bell has Buddhist scripture on it.
What
do you think this place is?
The
second place I want to talk is Kong Miao(Confucius temple)
I
have walked around Guozijian Street before, but never entered the Kong Miao,
because I thought 20 RMB for the entrance ticket was too expensive.
After
reading an article about Kong Miao, however, I decided to check it out.
It
turned out to be a really wonderful. No wonder the entrance ticket is 20RMB.
There
are hundreds of gravestones which have names of people who passed the imperial
examination over the several hundred years.
I also
found a sundial and checked the time with my watch. It was faster than my watch
only by 5 minutes.
It
is somewhat disappointing that there were only few Chinese people compared with
foreigners visiting Kong Miao.
When
I went to Westminster Abbey in London or Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, there
were a lot of local people as well as travelers visiting there and enjoy them.
Especially,
British people respect their tradition and history which has been transferred
from their ancestors over the past.
It
is the time that we should pay more attention to our own tradition and history.
Don’t
forget that this is Beijing which is filled with tradition and history.
Zhongguancun Toastmasters Club had a election on June.10. and chose new
executive committee as below. New executive committee will start their work from
July.1
President:Kinky VPE:Lily Yunfei(A) VPM:Cindy
Lichuan(A) VPPR: Lisha Sammi(A) Treasurer: Allen Amy(A) Secretary:
Marilyn Chillin(A) SAA: Shell Ruth(A) Michael(A)
Our President Cliff always looked resolute, especially with his hand gestures
:-)
I guess Kinky, our new president, will bring new, fresh atmosphere into our
club.
Kinky were already quite happy with the gavel she will use soon.
Emlyn(Yunfei) made a speech of running for not CMO(Chief Martial Arts Officer),
but Assistant to V.P.Education. If anybody will not be at the meeting as
scheduled, he/she should expect blow from flying cloud from now on.
Lily was persuading people to vote for her to be V.P.Education. Did you watch
all of Darren's material? I guess you watched at least some of them.
The only PK we had that day. Allen(also can be called Ten Thousand Tigers!) and
Amy runned for the treasurer and Allen managed to win. Amy will help Allen as an
assistant to treasurer.
Marilyn delivered the wonderful speech that day and also was giving us her
lovely speech for being a secretary.
Keith, our district governor, came to our club to compliment our club's
achivement in such a short period. I was looking for the chance to say hello to
him, since I already saw him in Shanghai's conference. But, I failed to catch
the chance, because he seemed so busy :-)
I hope all new executive members enjoy their role and bring new energy to our
club!
Door
to the conference. So Toastmaster Club is 演讲会 in
Chinese, huh..
Before
Darren's stage time on May.30, you can see Darren & his girlfriend near the
wall.
The
second best thing of the conference was this little snack we could enjoy all
the time.
I
was wondering what this bald guy was doing with the beauty at the conference.
Later I got to understand why this beauty was with this man, Darren.
The
stage time was just about to start. I cannot describe how wonderful he
delivered his speech. It's just 只能意会,不能言传。
Before
the conference on May.31
We
are ready to enjoy, Toastmasters!
I
was on the stage and quite excited even if I didn't say anything.
Chris
was delivering his 11th speech and ...
received
the best speech award from Cliff (in their wildest dream!)
Actually,
we were taking photos on the stage in the break time.
Gamp,
Jaehyun and Cliff who is dangerous, especially for SHEEP!
Oh,
I couldn't forget to say. Cliff was quite famous at the conference with this
note. Cliff Li- president of Zhongguancun TM looking for a hot, rich man(!)
Stage
time again with our members. Chris, Joy, Cliff, Matt, Lily, Gamp and Jaehyun.
Speakers-
Zhuchiren, Dinah, Leah, Joe, Erik, Peter Wan, Polo. Leah, Peter, Joe got 1, 2,
3 respectively.
Volunteers
who made our conference wonderful. Yes, we love TMC!
On April 13, we had a spring outing at Cherry Valley in Beijing Botanical
Garden. There were Cliff, Gamp, Lily, Kat, Lisha, Sophia, Justin, Jaehyun, Patch
and Kinky who went Beijing Botanical Garden and enjoyed spring with thousands of
other Beijingers, because Beijing Botanical Garden is the best place to enjoy
spring in Beijing.
After arriving at Cherry Valley, we enjoyed the tea time with various food
everybody brought and endless talk. One food we cannot forget is spicy chicken
cuisine which Cliff brought. Even if Cliff told us that he made it himself, we
could not believe he indeed cooked it himself, because it was too delicious.
Area N12 Level Speech and Evaluation Contest on April.8
With a line-up of the area’s best speakers and evaluators from
Zhongguancun, China Capital, Microsoft Beijing, and Speak Easy @
SunBeijing Club, it was an event that we will not forget. Lily and Catherine
took part in the contest as a speaker and an evaluator respectively. By a really
close vote, Lily won the second best speaker award and Catherine got the second
best evaluator award.
全家福 as of April.8
April.8’s meeting was also the last meeting Tina attended before
heading to Seatle and we took a photo together. There were Tina, Helen, Liu yi,
Marilyn, Kat, Sophia, Gamp, Melody, Kinky, Cindy, Shell, Catherine, Chris, Lily,
Sammi, David, Jaehyun and Cliff.
When we see this photo ten years later, we will miss the day we
participated together and maybe regret a bit and think we could have been more
enthusiastic.
Chris Married and went to Suzhou
Our very distinguished CEO and speaker Chris married and left us. On his last
speech, Chris gave us an overview of his Competitive Communicator journey by
showing us seasoned speeches of Reagan, Martin Luther King (Yes, I have a
dream!) and so on. We learned that our final objective of Competitive
Communicator Program were “Persuade” and “Inspire” by being “Persuaded” and
“Inspired” by Chris’s final speech.
Today's speech was successful, even though I couldn't get the best prepared speech award. I knew what the most important objective of the speech is.
It is to inspire people with what you know and what you believe. In order to do that, the most important part of the speech is the contents. How well I deliver the speech is not as important as I thought.
Persuade and Inspire the audience with your IDEAS!
To be a millionaire
What is your goal in your life?
To work as long as you can and save enough money for the life
after the retirement. It seems that the only way we can secure the life in our
sixties or seventies is to work until retirement.
But, there is another way if you see things differently.
You can choose to be a millionaire! Maybe you can be a millionaire
in your forties. If you invest $1 million wisely, you can get a ROI(return on
investment) of $100,000 every year.
Then you don’t have to work 9 to 6 (or 9 in the evening) from Monday
to Saturday in the small office like the cage.
Instead, you can do
10 days’ trip to Hawaii for two people $ 11,000
52 times’ eating out for $ 100$ 5,200
Buying a Mercedes$ 7,220
Golf club membership$ 5,000
Weekly Spa$ 5,200
Sounds amazing, huh?
Then, what do you have to do to be a millionaire?
Here are the most important three factors to become a
millionaire.
-How long you invest?
-How much money you invest?
-How much is your return on investment?
Start with saving money if you want to be a millionaire.
The author recommends to save 15 % of your salary after the tax.
But, I plan to save 50% of my salary when I start to make a
money again.
If you have enough money, you can be a millionaire only with 10%
or 15 % of ROI.
If you want to be a millionaire with not a big money, you have to
get 30% to 40% of ROI. In this case, you start your own business to get more
than 40 % ROI, or if you are really a genius at investment, you can make a 40%
ROI in the stock market.
One thing I should add is that the longer you invest, the more
you can make.
So, it’s better start to save and early as early as possible.
Thinking alone couldn’t give you any return.
Start to act to be a millionaire now and you will be a
millionaire.
We had a joint meeting with Speakeasy and 6
prepared speeches, Lily, Kat, Cliff from ZTC and Melanie, Colin, Jian from
Speakeasy. Now we knew how exciting it is to see 6 brilliant speeches at one
time, rather than in two weeks.
Lily, Melanie got the best speech awards,
and Chris and Aaron got the best evaluator awards. At that day, Lily delivered “Prison
Break” first.
Taboo Guessing Game and PaiX2
On Mar.11, Claudia made us do
Taboo guessing game, which was quite fresh and also difficult(!). Do any of you
who had to explain the word remember it?
I do. Aqua jogging!
Gamp, our distinguished V.P.E, delivered
his CC9 speech about PaiX2, also had another name of Pangzi.
Excellent
Speeches on Mar 18
Do you still remember this day? Claudia
delivered her first speech named “Culture Shock”. After hearing her speech, some
of us thought she would get the best award. And she would, if it was a normal
day. Then, Marilyn made a really heartbreaking speech “My Father”. It is about
being back in hometown after 8 years. That’s not an end. Chris delivered his
CC9 speech “How to Start a War”. All speeches were really brilliant and the
best speech award went to Marilyn.
"Club Level International Speech Contest & Evaluation
Contest"
Lily, Kat, Liu yi, David and Jaehyun took
part in the speech contest and Catherine, Marilyn, Chillin and Tina
participated in the evaluation contest.
Lily and Catherine won the best speech
award and the best evaluation award respectively.
What do you mean by that?
Today is the 12,707th day I lived on the planet earth. I don’t know why but recently, I recalled some past experiences and
people I know like my ex-girlfriend. But my reminiscing only started after
2003, the year I came to China. When I get tired from thinking about my ex-girlfriend and my days at
Qingdao I suddenly wondered how I was Like 10 years ago.
Let me see, hmm. In 1998 the whole country was going through a financial crisis, I
was a junior in a university then. While many people in Korea Struggled to make
both ends meet, I was enjoying the most affluent time of my life. I was teaching English and Mathematics to a couple of middle school
students several times a week. Meanwhile, I didn’t have much time to study. Yes, it was the richest time in my life also because I still got
money from my parents. Now I 'm thinking , I shouldn't have asked money from them.
And I was much
younger than now. Even if somebody
here is still younger than the age I was in 1998, I can be definitely satisfied
with my age at that time. I didn’t worry about the age, when I first got
to China 5 years ago. But, nowadays I feel the pressure of my age. Because I think I could
have done better and might have had more.
As for a girl friend, I didn’t have one in 1998. Neither do I, now. No difference. But, my younger brother always had a girl friend
those days. Now, he is already married. So, the same thing happens all the time.
Then, I started to wonder which incident triggered the dramatic
change in my life. It
was when I resigned from the company I first worked for in 2001. When
I quitted the company, I dreamt of a different kind of life. Actually, I didn’t know it clearly, but I wanted to have something
different. After the resignation, my life has not been very stable.
I
tried to be a news reporter and a pilot, which is my third biggest mistake and
started to work in China and finally study in Beijing. When my ex-girl friend told me that I was too unstable for her to think
her future life with me, I
didn’t understand what she meant. But, now I understand what she said.
Take a comparison with my friend who still works for the first
company I worked. He has worked for that company for 8 years and will be a manager
soon. He got married and already bought an apartment in Seoul, which I am
not sure when I can buy mine.
Okay, let’s try to see the bright side.
First, after quitting the company, I happened to have much time to
study English as well as Chinese so that I can read books in Chinese and
English, even if it takes much more time
than the time I spend with Korean books. It is really wonderful to read in Chinese and
English, because both culture are very rich and lots of interesting thing to
know. Also, when we read the translated books, tendency is we might miss
the real essence of its meaning.
Second, I am not married yet, which also means I can be much happier
with a companion who I don’t know yet. Because I am already happy with myself. But, I am not quite sure I can find. Let’s wait more. Third, I am much more generous than before, because I happened to
meet many people and also went through some difficult time.
I have learned to be thankful and be satisfied with the things I
have and what I am now. Most importantly, my mom said that she thought I am far better son
than 10 years ago. So, it’s quite certain that I am more considerate person
than before.
