Harvard Business Review on Advances in Strategy (Paperback)
Michael Porter, Robert Kaplan, David Norton | Harvard Business School Press | 2002년 05월

Since my thesis is about strategic management, I have been reading a great deal of reading materials about strategy. Actually, this book was the result of impulse buying. When I was looking for a recent harvard business review at www.taobao.com, I found out that this book could be bought at 65RMB(What a great deal!), I just clicked the button to buy without hesitation.

This book has several articles about strategy, which are already published in Harvard Business Review. Among them, I like "Having Trouble with Your Stategy? Then Map it" by Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton most. They are already very famous for Balance Score Card and developed their idea more elegantly in this article.

"If people can describe strategy in a more disciplined way, they will increase the likelihood of its successful implementation. Strategy maps will help organizations view their strategy in a cohesive, integrated, and systematic way."

This is the main idea of the article and quite makes sense. The more we map strategy in a clear way, the more we are aware of strategy. In that case, we have a better chance to make it real.

Another article I really like is "Transforming Corner-Office Strategy into Frontline Action" by Orit Gadiesh and James L. Gilbert. This article is easy to read, but full of imagination, which is only the wise can do. No wonder Orit Gadiesh has been the chairman(actually chairwoman) of Bain & Company.
This article is about stategic principle. Let's check out several companies' strategic principles.

Dell                     Be direct
eBAy                   Focus on trading communities
General Electric    Be number one or number two in every industry in which we compete, or get out
Southwest Airlines Meet customers' short-haul travel needs at fares competitive with the cost of automobile travel
Vanguard             Unmatchable value for the investor-owner
Wal-Mart              Low prices, every day

Wow! These strategic principles are really something they have sticked to so that they have been successful over the years. How many Korean companies do they have a clear stragic principle they acutally care? (Actually, I am not very sure of the answer because I have not been reading Korean newspaper for a long time)

I think the three most important subjects in Business Administration are Corporate Finance, Marketing and Strategy. Among them, Strategy is the most interesting subject in a sense that it actually consists of Corporate Finance and Marketing.
